Caring for Your Lapel Pins – Sterling Silver, Gold-Plated and Enamel

Much like fine jewellery, they require proper care to maintain their lustre and condition. With correct storage, gentle handling, and appropriate cleaning, your lapel pin will remain a valued accessory for years to come.

• Store correctly – Keep lapel pins in a dry, cool environment.
• Airtight protection – Whenever possible, store each pin in a resealable plastic grip bag or airtight jewellery box. If you know your lapel pins will not be distributed immediately, please let us know when ordering and we can recommend suitable packaging to help preserve their pristine condition.
• Minimise exposure to air pollutants – Tarnishing occurs when metals react with oxygen, moisture, and pollutants such as sulphur compounds. Reducing contact will slow the process.
• Handle with care – Fingerprints contain oils and salts that can cause oxidation. Where possible, hold pins by the edges.
• Avoid humidity and chemicals – Humid conditions, perfumes, lotions, hairsprays, and cleaning agents can accelerate tarnish or damage finishes. Remove lapel pins before showering, swimming, sunbathing, or applying personal care products.
• Separate storage – Store each lapel pin individually to avoid scratches.

For routine maintenance, gently polish the lapel pin — including the enamel — using a specialist jewellery polishing cloth such as the Hagerty Silver Cloth (30 × 36 cm), available from Cookson Gold.

Instructions:

1. Use smooth, light motions to buff the surface.
2. Avoid excessive rubbing, which can wear away plating over time.
3. Do not wash the cloth, as this removes the cleaning agents.

Important: Avoid home cleaning remedies such as toothpaste, baking soda, or other abrasives – these can scratch or permanently damage the lapel pin or other corporate jewellery items.

If tarnish has developed, we recommend Hagerty Silver Clean Dip (170 ml) – available from Cookson Gold.

Instructions:

1. Place the lapel pin in the provided basket.
2. Immerse it in the solution for no more than two minutes.
3. Rinse thoroughly with warm water.
4. Dry immediately with a soft, lint-free cloth to prevent watermarks.

Always handle lapel pins carefully to avoid bending components or scratching surfaces.

• Storage – Store enamelled lapel pins separately in a cloth pouch or poly bag to prevent contact with hard objects.
